Khutala

Khutala Colliery comprises both an underground and opencast mine, situated in the Witbank coalfield, located approximately 30km southwest of eMalahleni, and approximately 100km to the east of Johannesburg. It produces around 5.5Mtpa of thermal coal from its underground mine for Eskom’s Kendal power station.

The underground operation uses bord-and-pillar mining methods.

Khutala employs 3,239 people – 1,810 permanent employees and 1,429 contractors.

Seriti acquired the colliery from South 32 in June 2021.

Established in 1986, the mine has sufficient resources to supply coal to the Kendal power station until 2033.
