Kriel

Kriel Colliery is both an underground and opencast mining complex, located 45km south of eMalahleni in Mpumalanga. It provides around 4Mtpa of thermal coal directly to Eskom’s Kriel power station.

The colliery uses mechanised bord-and-pillar methods to mine the underground operation, and its opencast operation uses draglines as well as truck-and-shovels.

Kriel employs 2,652 people – 950 permanent employees and 1,720 contractors.

Seriti acquired the mine from Anglo American in 2018.

Established in 1975, the mine has sufficient resources to supply the Kriel power station until 2035.
