Seriti Green (made up of Windlab Development South Africa and Windlab East Africa) consists of 23 projects (2.65GWs) at different stages of development.

Seriti Green utilises the industry-leading atmospheric wind modelling and energy analysis tool, Windscape, giving the business a competitive advantage and rapid growth potential. Among its portfolio are two successfully completed wind projects in South Africa along the West Coast and the Amakhala Emoyeni wind farm in the Eastern Cape.

Our track record includes the development of 1,300MW projects to start construction in South Africa, located in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga and an additional 2,000MW developmental pipeline in Mpumalanga.

Two additional development projects in the Africa portfolio are the Miombo Hewani 300MW wind farm in Tanzania and the Meru County 120MW Energy Park in Kenya.

Amakhala Emoyeni

Amakhala Emoyeni (meaning “aloes in the wind” in the local Xhosa language) is a 134MW wind farm located near the town of Bedford, in the Eastern Cape.

The project is the first phase of the larger concept which includes Msenge Emoyeni and Iziduli Emoyeni.

The region was identified by Windlab in 2009 as an excellent area for wind development due to the high wind speeds and the proximity to high-capacity transmission. Windlab then secured the land and began the development process.

The environmental authorisation was granted in 2011 for the greater region (including the Msenge and Iziduli phases).

The same year, Windlab partnered with Cennergi (a joint venture between Exxaro and Tata Power) and successfully bid the project into South Africa’s renewable energy program.

The project began commercial operations in 2016.

The project will have significant benefits for the local community. In addition to employing dozens of local contractors, part of the project is owned by two local community trusts – this provides over $14.5 million in local economic development.

Aurora Wind

Aurora Wind is a 94 MW wind farm located 130 km north of Cape Town, in the Western Cape.

The site was approved in 2012 as part of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) program.

The project was conceived in 2007 in financial partnership with Investec, an international asset management corporation. The project was sold to Investec Bank along with a portfolio of 14 projects in South Africa, later to be taken up by ENGIE (formerly GDF SUEZ, France), Investec Bank Limited and Tiso Resources Pty. Ltd.

Along with identifying the site using WindScape, Windlab was responsible for implementing the wind monitoring strategy and undertaking modelling of the wind resource at the site.

Project construction began in 2013. Commercial operations began in June 2015. The project is operated by Aurora Wind Power, a venture of ENGIE.

Project construction created 600 jobs, 450 of them local. Equity is divided between ENGIE, Investec, and KTH, with 2.5% held by a Community Trust. This Trust is intended for the support and development of the local community.

Ishwati Emoyeni

The Ishwati Emoyeni (meaning “candelabra flower in the wind” in the local Xhosa language) Project is located near Murraysburg in South Africa’s Western Cape Province. The site covers approximately 24,000 hectares.

The site was identified using WindScape in 2008 and the land was leased in 2010. The project is fully approved with the Environmental Authorisation being granted in 2016. Provisional Civil Aviation Authority approval has also been given.

The project has several years of wind measurements from a number of monitoring towers and remote sensing SODAR units.

Msenge Emoyeni

The Msenge Emoyeni (loosely translating to “cabbage tree in the wind” in the local Xhosa language) Project is located near Bedford in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province.

Msenge Emoyeni is the second phase of the greater Amakhala Emoyeni project concept, a 27,000 hectare area that is close to good infrastructure such as roads and the national electricity grid.

The greater project concept has been awarded Environmental Authorisation following an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), and approval has been granted by the South African Civil Aviation Authority. Heritage Approval (from the South African Heritage Resources Agency) has been granted for the project.
