Middelburg Mine Services (MMS) (formerly the Wolwekrans and Ifalethu Mines) comprises two open-cast mining operations Middelburg North and Middelburg South. The Complex is located 25km south of eMalahleni, in Mpumalanga.
Middelburg Mine Services (MMS) (formerly the Wolwekrans and Ifalethu Mines) comprises two open-cast mining operations Middelburg North and Middelburg South. The Complex is located 25km south of eMalahleni, in Mpumalanga.
Middelburg North produces around 6.5Mtpa of thermal coal for Duvha Power station, and Middelburg South produces around 9Mtpa coal for the export market.
This is a large-scale drag-line complex, supplemented by truck-and-shovel operations. Coal destined for the export market, is transported by rail to RBCT, and then exported largely to European markets.
MMS employs 3,739 people as at 31 March 2024.
Seriti acquired the colliery from South 32 in June 2021.
Established in 1979, the complex has an expected life of mine until 2034.
