New Denmark is an underground colliery, located around 30km north of Standerton in Mpumalanga. It provides around 3Mtpa of thermal coal to Eskom’s Tutuka power station.
New Denmark is an underground colliery, located around 30km north of Standerton in Mpumalanga. It provides around 3Mtpa of thermal coal to Eskom’s Tutuka power station.
New Denmark is one of South Africa’s deepest coal mining operations, operating to a depth of 200m. It is a mechanised operation with 11 CM sections moving to 12 CM sections in FY23 The LW is in the process of being phased out of the production fleet and stopped producing in April 2021.
New Denmark employs more than 3,044 people as at 31 March 2024
Seriti acquired the colliery from Anglo American in 2018.
Commissioned in 1982, the mine has sufficient resources to supplying coal to the Tutuka power station until 2039.
