Spending Mandela Day at Middelburg Hoërskool

Each year, on the day of Nelson Mandela’s birthday, 18 July, Mandela Day is celebrated across the world. The day honours the legacy and values of the former President by giving back to the community.

To commemorate Mandela Day in 2024, Seriti Power Community Trust donated an installable hybrid solar system comprised of over 1,000 solar panels with 9.50kva inverters to Hoërskool Middelburg (MHS); affectionally known as Middies, to enable the school to function off the grid. The school boasts 1,350 learners of which 200 are boarders.

This installation comes with a 5-year warranty on the inverters, 10-year or 6,000 cycles on batteries, a 12-year product and a 25-year performance warranty on PV.

This school is a Mathematics, Science and Technology school and as such, it is dependent on a constant supply of energy to power its e-learning and teaching programmes. The school is adorned with Smartboards that connect to the Mathematics Science and Technology Academy, which co-incidentally is a flagship donation flowing from the Seriti /South32 transaction. Our association with the Academy continues under the stewardship of Seriti Resources.

As a business that values the safety of our employees and members of our host communities, a safety brief session was also held by the School Principal, who guided the guests on all necessary safety precautions and procedures.

Our Seriti Power Community Trustee, Mlungisi Mahlangu spoke on behalf of the committee members and expressed their pride on the completion of the project. He gave a brief background on how this Solar System project was selected and conveyed the belief from the committee that this project would benefit thousands from the community.
